More visits on the horizon

Rex Burkhead has been busy on the recruiting trail this spring and summer. After taking in a handful of junior days, spring games and unofficial visits Burkhead looks at the rest of the summer and where he might visit. Things will happen fast with June winding down and Burkhead still looking to possibly make a commitment by the start of his senior season.

At 5-foot-11 and 195-pounds with 4.5-speed, Rex Burkhead is one of the most dangerous football players in America. The athlete from Plano (Texas) has put up over 4,000 yards in total offense the past two years.

"I was the newcomer of the year as a sophomore," Burkhead said. "I was also first team all-district the past two years. Last year I was the Offensive MVP for the district."

Burkhead is sitting on over 30 offers ranging from teams such as LSU, Nebraska, Alabama, Auburn, Michigan, Stanford, California and Texas Tech. Still, Burkhead isn't ready to trim the list.

"I am going to go on some more visits this summer. I hope to have a list of top schools by the end of the summer. That is why I am taking these visits now, to narrow the list."

Burkhead has already seen Texas, Texas Tech, Nebraska, TCU, Kentucky, Louisville and camp at Alabama last summer. Still, he is planning visits to see LSU and would like to get out west.

"I would like to take a trip out to California and check out some schools. I would like to see Cal and Stanford. Going to see Alabama and Auburn are two other visits I would like to take."

What all of these teams see in Burkhead is clear, whether it's on offense or defense, and that is that he is a difference maker. Burkhead can hurt you from a lot of different positions on the field.

"I am versatile as a player. I can run and I can catch passes. I have the ability to lineup at different positions on the field. Everyone likes me as a running back, but Wake Forest likes me as a cornerback."

When Burkhead gets ready to narrow his list after some additional trips he is going to look at some key things. Burkhead is looking for the complete package in his college decision.

"I am looking for great academics first because I want to get a good education. There is also looking for a great football coaching staff and looking for that great team and campus atmosphere."

The timeframe has been the same for Burkhead the whole time about his decision. Burkhead wants to get a commitment out of the way big the start of the season. But he even knows that might not happen.

"I would like to get it done by the end of the summer or by the start of the season, ideally. If it goes into the season and I take some trips that that is fine too."

Burkhead combines 4.5-speed with a 320-pound bench press, 500-pound squat, 245-pound clean and 38" vertical jump. He is currently holding a 3.65 GPA.
