Although he has yet to visit any of the eight offering schools, that doesn't mean Smith has just been sitting on his couch. He has visited Michigan, Illinois, Purdue, Northwestern, Iowa and Indiana, where he camped last week.
"They're the only school who has talked to me about playing defensive end," the 6'3, 230-lber said, "I worked with the defensive line coach at their camp."
Smith has also recently camped at Illinois, where he had another impressive performance and may put himself in position for that ninth scholarship.
"They had called my coach and said they wanted me down for the weekend of camp and if I did well there, I could earn an offer. I went there on the 16th and I did well, I ran two forties and averaged a 4.61 and had a 36-inch vertical."
If the offer does come, the Fighting Illini would jump to the top of the list for Smith, who said, "I think playing there would be a dream come true for me."
Smith also believes a couple other big offers could be on the way, in which case, his recruitment would speed up and could come to an end.
"I'm sure if a Big Ten or Big 12 school were to offer, I would commit this summer, but if it looks like it won't happen right away, I will make my choice after the season."
