Team Preview: Compton College

Even though they struggled to get wins in 2007, Compton College had some talented players and with a coaching change, the hope is the Tartars will be able to challenge the best of the best in the So Cal JUCO ranks sooner rather than later. New head coach Jason Brown updated recently on his roster that is loaded with potential D-1 prospects...

"Things are changing around here," Brown told "It will take a year, but I think we have the basis of a great team and we have some really good players.

"I had 148 kids come out for spring ball, so it was really a lot of fun for us and we had some really talented players out there. We also had our first annual Maroon and Grey Game and we looked really crisp and it just showed that we are focused on things."

Brown has talent on both sides of the ball, but his receivers and defensive backs are loaded with talented prospects.

Here are the players to keep an eye on this fall...

WR Steve Tirogene "He had 58 catches as a freshman last year and over 1,050 yards and 11 touchdowns, so he should get some accolades this year before the season starts. He's 6-3, 190, real rangy and he's got great hands and he's surprisingly strong for his stature. He blocks well down field and he's a 4.4 guy that can stretch the field, but he run the dig route, the curl route and he really uses his hands well, he never lets the ball get into his body.

"He's being recruited really heavily right now. Illinois, Kansas State, Colorado and a lot of the Pac 10 schools are very interested in him."

RB Sheldon Dennis "He's 6-3, 235 and he's a 10.45 100 meter guy. He's out of Lakeland, Florida and he's being recruited pretty heavily by Oregon, Oregon State, Arizona State and they all really like his size and speed.

"He played for us in spots last year, but he still managed to go for over 500 yards and five touchdowns both rushing and receiving. He had 25 catches for us out of the backfield last year so he's got soft hands and he's a great receiver."

WR Markish Jones "He's a bounceback from Clemson. He's 6-1, 195. Very versatile and athletic. We like what he has to offer. He's got sure hands and he had a great spring, so we're expecting big things out of him this fall."

WR Brandon King "He's a South Carolina bounceback. He's 6-6, 215 and he's obviously a big target and he's real physical as a wide receiver. He runs really well. He was here this spring and he's a really athletic guys. He ran a 4.55 for us this spring. He can go up and get the ball and he's a good route runner."

WR Reggie Dunn "He's a kid that signed with Oregon State and that USC wanted really bad and actually SC wants him back, but he's a guy who can just fly. He will play receiver for us. He's 5-11, 185 and we've had him in the weight room all spring and he looks really good right now. He'll be close to being one and done here because he's been working hard in the classroom so he can graduate in December. If he does that, then he'll have some great choices of schools to go to.

"If he finishes up this December like we think he will, he will have four to play three."

WR Allen Strickland "He's a Florida kid. He's 6-0, 200 and he's a really hard worker. He had 20 receptions for us last year and he's a really hard worker. We're getting him to work on his hands a little more, but California loved him in practice. We'll see what he can do."

WR Jewel Hardy "He's a full-qualifier out of Lynnwood (Ca.) High School and he's 6-5, 210 so he's a big target. Kansas State wants to offer him and he's never played a down. He's only played one year of football so the sky is the limit. They wanted to offer him off of just watching spring ball and so did New Mexico State so those are pretty much on the table for him. He'll have four to play three if someone wants him after the season."

WR Audwin Tolbert "He's 6-4, 220 and he was All-CIF in both football and basketball so the kid is an athlete. He was our spring game player of the game and he's real rangy, he ran a 4.55 forty and he can jump out of the gym. He's very athletic, very physical and he's got great hands.

"People will start salivating over him because he was ineligible last year, but most of the Pac 10 is already after him."

RB A.J. Simeon "He was at Illinois last year so he transferred from there and he's 5-11, 205. He's a scat-back who has some physicality to him so he can run over people and he's a great receiver so we'll use him in that role a lot. He's got great speed and he's more of a zone-type runner."

OT Christopher Brooks "He's one of our offensive tackles. He's 6-4, 320 and last year he only allowed one sack in 10 games, so he's fleet-footed and very athletic to match up with some of the great pass-rushers we face off against every week. He needs to work on his work ethic a little bit, but he's being recruited by everyone from Oklahoma to Florida State.

"Last year he played right tackle, but this year he could play left tackle if it fits our program, but he's versatile enough to play guard for us too."

OT/OG Cameron Lowe "He'll be a tackle for us this year. He's athletic, strong and he's got great feet. He played in all 10 games for us last year. He's 6-4, 300 and a lot of schools liked him after spring ball. I know Middle Tennessee and Louisiana-Lafayette both like him a lot, but they want to see how he turns out this fall."

OG James Camarillo "He'll be our left guard this year and he was a full-time starter for us last year as a freshman. He started all 10 games and we're looking for big things from him. He's got experience and he's 6-3, 335. He bench presses 515 so he's about as strong as you get and he squats 700 so if he gets his AA degree in December he'll get a bunch of offers."

OG Foketi Inoke "He's 5-11, 300 so he's a little undersized. He'd be good enough to play at USC if he was just a little bit taller. He's real athletic and quick. He's probably a Mountain West, MAC or WAC player just because of his size."

QB Santos Gonzalez "He played at San Bernardino Valley for me back in 2006 and he's real athletic and a playmaker. He's about 6-0, 195 and he runs a 4.4 and he's got a cannon for an arm. I expect big things out of him playing quarterback this year."

OLB Kobi Williams "He's 6-4, 235 and he's an outside linebacker who runs in the 4.4 range. He's a freakish athlete and a great weight room guy. He's a physical specimen. Kansas State has offered him and Oregon, Oregon State and Cal have also been looking at him really hard. USC loves him too."

OLB Oscar Petty "He's a Floridian and he's an outside linebacker for us. He's 6-2, 240 and he runs a 4.5 forty and he did really well at the combine. He's real athletic and a big-time hitter and he's a leader in our linebacker corps.

"He's hearing from the Big 12, the SEC, the Big 10 and the Pac 10 just off of his athleticism."

DT Brandon Warner "He's from Atlanta, Georgia and he plays nose guard or defensive tackle for us. He's 6-2, 300 and ran a 4.75 and he benches 555 and everyone is asking me about this guy because he's a freak-of-nature athletically. He's a real spark-plug in the middle for us."

DE Daniel Riley "He was signed by Oregon out of high school, but he ran into some off-field problems so that didn't work out, but he's a full-qualifier and he's 6-4, 265 and a physical specimen who will play defensive end for us."

DE Marquis Wright "He was the Mission Conference defensive player of the year at Mt. San Antonio in 2005, but he's just never been able to be eligible. He's going to have to go D-2 because of his clock issues. He's a freakishly talented player. He's 6-4, 268 and he ran a 4.58 forty at the combine. His brother is Manuel Wright who played at SC and is now with the New York Giants."

DE Jameson Moody "Bounceback from Central Michigan. He's a big defensive end with a lot of strength and athleticism and he'll be one and done with us this fall. He'll probably go back to Central Michigan or he'll have to get his AA degree."

DT Howard Burley "He played for me at San Bernardino and Boise State loves him. He's an interior guy. He's 6-2, 290 and he's got a great motor and he can really run – he ran a 4.85 at the combine. He's a three-technique defensive tackle so he could actually play end too. He's very versatile."

CB Maxwell Lacy "Signed with Oregon State out of high school with his friend Reggie Dunn and he'll be a big corner for us at 6-3, 200. He's probably going to be a one-and-done with us because he's been taking full loads as far as classes are concerned. USC loves him."

CB Josiah McNeil "He played at Cerritos last year. He's about 5-10, 200 and he's a lockdown, man-to-man, cover-corner. He can run well, but he's probably a cover-two corner. Kansas State likes him."

CB Tre Cromartie "He's one of our freshman qualifiers. He's a big lockdown corner and he's strong. He works really, really hard. We like him a lot."

S E.J. McLoughlin "He played all 11 games for Central Michigan last year at strong safety. He's 6-2, 225 and he actually picked off a pass against Purdue last year in their bowl game, but he became academically ineligible so he came to us and we're really excited to see him come out here.

"He's already hearing from a lot of schools. He was offered by pretty much everybody as a junior and then his senior year he blew out his knee and he had to sign with Central Michigan and ended up being All-MAC so he'll be pretty heavily recruited when it's all said and done and he can sign in December."

S Jeremy Ruff "He signed with Kentucky, but sat out last year because of reconstructive knee surgery. He's 6-2, 210 and he flies around and just hits guys. He's the guy who runs the show in our back half. The Pac 10, SEC and Big 12 schools have all been after him and Kansas State has been all over him."

Other Compton players to watch: WR Erik Chairs; LB Erik Khoshkbariie; LB Henry Smith; CB Sherman Myles.
