D1 Teams In All Caps
District Outlook: This District has been considered on of the weakest 3A Districts in the State for many years. Don't think that will be the case this year. Cleveland looks really strong this season along with Coldspring and with Huffman dropping back down to 3A this District will be much improved in 08. Question is who will win the District Title?
Team By Team
Cleveland Indians: I have picked Cleveland to win this District this season, after a few bad years the Indians look strong this season with the return of RB's Benny Wright and Jamaul Gibson. Plenty of experience returns along with 16 starters. The OL will be even better this season with the Blocking of Richard Pillot. On Defense the Indians have one of the best LB's in the District in Steven Robertson.
Coldspring Trojans: Coach Barbay returns 13 starters from a team that made it to the playoffs last season before losing to WO-S. The Trojans are lead by RB James Acott who has tremendous speed and Qb Chad Allen. Just about the entire OL returns along with 7 starters on Defense led by OLD Undra Holman. Look for Coldspring to challenge Cleveland for the Title.
Huffman Falcons: Huffman drops back down to 3A and returns 12 starters from a 2-8 team in 4A. I look for the Falcons to make the Playoffs and once again wouldn't be surprised if they won the District Title. They are lead on Offense by RB B.J. Rice and QB desi Tchussen. On Defense TE/LB Michael Hamilition is about as tough as they come.
Splendora Wildcats: The Wildcats finished 07 making the postseason after posting a 7-4 record. They only return 3 starters on Offense and now the District is even tougher. The Ol looks good with the return of All District OT Mike Whelihan. The Wildcats may have lost to many players to make the postseason this year but i could see them playing Spoiler.
Liberty Panthers: New Head Coach Shane Deel will try and get the Panthers back to the Playoffs in 08 after a 2-3 District mark last season. The Panthers like Splendora only return 3 on Offense. The Offense will be led by RB De'Jonge Robinson and RB James Freeman. The Panthers had agreat Offseason and the young kids will have to step up and stay injry free if the Panthers are to make the Postseason. Look for even bigger things next season under Coach Deel.
Shepherd Pirates: Shepherd has no where to go but up this season after finishing up at 1-9. Look for the Pirates to be better this season with 14 starters back including TB Keondre Shaw. The Defesne will be the strong point for the Pirates with the likes of LB Cody Lane and DE Kelley O'Brien. MLB Clint Riddle was an All District pick last season. Speed will hurt the Pirates.
Tarkington Longhorns: I really wish Tarkington and Cleveland would merge! Tarkington just doesn't have the depth to compete in 3A. The Longhorns finished with an 0-10 mark in 07. They do return 14 starters and hopefully will get a few W's in the win column. RB Brent Johnson will lead the Offense and DE Justin Lawrence will get plenty of playing time on Defense. Experience alone should get the Horns a few W's.
