2008 Preseason All-Central Texas Team

There is no shortage of talent in Central Texas this fall, but only the best of the best made the cut and found a home on TexasPrepInsider.com's Preseason All-Central Texas Team for 2008.

SAN MARCOS – The Texas Longhorns and Coach Mack Brown have done a great job in recent years of keeping their talent close to home, dominating recruiting in Central Texas.

This recruiting cycle is yet another prime example that Brown and his staff are finding talent in the Centex region as four future Longhorns headline TexasPrepInsider.com's 2008 Preseason All-Central Texas Team.

The offense is headlined by Lake Travis quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who set single season state records for pass attempts, completions, and yards last season in leading the Cavaliers to a 15-1 record and the Class 4A, Division II state championship.

Gilbert, also our pick for preseason area MVP, is one of the three future Longhorns on the offensive team joining Madisonville running back Chris Whaley (who has more than 5,000 career rushing yards in three seasons), and Gilbert's teammate Paden Kelley, part of an impressive all-area offensive line. Joining Kelley in the trenches are Texas A&M commit Rhontae Scales of Killeen, Michael Brown of Lexington, Anthony Mackey of Copperas Cove, and Aleon Calhoun of Navasota.

Calhoun is one of four juniors on the team joining Temple running back Lache Seastrunk, Hutto tight end Nehemiah Hicks (who could see more time at defensive end this season despite a monster season on offense as a sophomore), and Pflugerville defensive tackle Tyrus Thompson.

Thompson is one of two Panthers on the first team defense as Texas pledge Alex Okafor, along with Round Rock Stony Point's Tevin Mims, and China Spring's Ryan Boutwell (a North Texas commit) round out the defensive line.

Headlining the defense is Copperas Cove linebacker Tanner Brock, who is our pick as Central Texas' Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

Our choice as preseason coach of the year is Waco La Vega's Willie Williams as the Pirates are primed for a big season with several key players returning from a team that finished 13-1 and reached the state quarterfinals.
