WK 1 Chalk Talk: Timberview Wolves

The Timberview Wolves were invited to play in the Kirk Herbstreit Classic to open up the 2008 season. Paired against Buford High School (GA), Mansfield allowed too many big plays to stay competitive and ultimately loss 42-21. Scout.com breaks down the play of Timberview and gives the key factors in their loss.

Led by RB Eric Stephens, the Timberview Wolves looked to be the favorite as they not only returned 12 total starters from last years playoff team, they also play in a larger classification than their opponent; Buford. However, Buford was not going to be a push over and Timberview needed to execute and limit there mistakes in order to win. They didn't and they loss.

Key Factors in Loss:

1)Special Teams

The Timberview special teams unit struggled, giving up one TD and allowing a nice return on another. As if giving up a TD isn't bad enough, they gave Buford good field position.

2)Rushing Defense

They allowed Buford to rush for 253 yards and 6 TDs. If they can't control an opponents rushing attack, the defense will get worn down and they will also lose the time of possession battle. 3)Ball Security

Timberview threw three interceptions at keys moments in the game. They also fumbled 3 times. They did not lose any of the fumbles but it is a problem that needs addressed or the score of the next game may look similar to this one.

Reasons For Optimism

The first game provides a benchmark for teams to see what a team needs to work on. Film is watched, adjustments are made and the teams proceeds accordingly. Timberview did not play so poorly that they have to go back to the drawing board, they just need to to tweak a few glitches. Luckily for Timberview, this loss will not effect their standing or their run at the playoffs.

Lastly, after making the playoffs the last two seasons, Timberview drops from 5A to 4A; should be a much easier rode to hoe. The loss to Buford (a smaller school) has shown them that they can not take anyone for granted. The loss had its benefits.

Timberview is a better team than the score of their first game would indicate. They possess a potent passing attack led by big time play making WRs Sharman Brown and Aaron Burks. Also remember RB Eric Stephens will break out, he is the states leading returning rusher. The sleeping giant will wake.
