TE Atkins Keeping In-touch with USF Staff

Local standout and Bulls commit Gerard Atkins says he's had good conversations with the South Florida staff and is anxious to see a game in-person this year. Read on to see how he's done this season, what his expectations are of the Bulls and who his favorite player is on the USF team.

Dixie Hollins tightend/WR Gerard Atkins is one of three Pinellas County recruits the Bulls have received early commits from. This season the 6-foot-5, 225 pound tightend is playing well even though they recently lost to Boca Ciega and fellow friend and USF recruit Julius Forte. Gerard has 5 catches and a touchdown, on defense he has 2 picks, one of which he returned for a 99 yard touchdown from his safety position.

Atkins says he's excited to see the Bulls get off to such a good start and likes what the rest of the season may bring.

"I think they got a chance to run the table. I really do."

When watching the South Florida games on TV, Atkins said there are a couple things he keeps an eye on.

"I watch Cedric Hill all the time. I like the way he's involved and the things he does on the field. I also watch to see how they play with emotion and try to add that to my game on Friday nights."

Besides watching the Bulls on TV, Gerard Atkins also keeps in touch with the USF coaching staff during the week.

"I talked to Coach Gregory and Coach Scott on Thursday night. They tell me to keep playing hard, stay in the weight room and keep my head up."

Atkins says he's still getting mail and email from colleges, but that's not a concern of his right now.

"I'm focused on school and our season. Everything is going good, I'm getting ready to take the ACT in mid-October and hopefully I get the score I need so I can get that out of the way."

On October 2nd Gerard says he'll be in Tampa for the USF vs. Pitt game. He will be there with fellow commit Jaquez Jenkins and possibly a few other big name recruits from the Tampa Bay Area inlcuding Juilius Forte and Mike Marry. USFNation will talk with Atkins again before the Pitt game. Stay tuned for more on the early commits of the '09 class.
