Payne Could Decide Soon

Cleveland South High School standout, Devontae Payne, has already taken in scholarship offers from Akron, Bowling Green and Toledo. The 6-foot-7 playmaker is looking to add more schools to his list of offers in the upcoming months.

Devontae Payne, the 6-foot-7, 233-pound quarterback from Cleveland (Ohio) South has been offered by Akron, Bowling Green and Toledo. Ohio State, Kansas State, Michigan, Florida State and Iowa are few of the other big-time programs taking a look at Payne.

"I like Akron a lot right now," Payne said. "I speak with their coaches a lot, particularly Coach (Joe) Moorehead. Coach (J.D.) Brookhart offered me a scholarship about two or three months ago to play for the Zips.

"I have been down to Akron and saw their facilities and the campus-- I thought everything was nice. They are talking about redshirting me my first year at Akron, but if I choose to go there, I am going to go in there and fight for the number one spot."

Payne, like most Ohio High School football prospects, would love to make the two-hour trek down I-71 to play for Ohio State next season.

"I like OSU as well, but I don't have an offer from them yet," he said. "Coach (Taver) Johnson and Coach (Nick) Siciliano keep me up to date on everything. They aren't sure if they are going to take a quarterback or not for the class of 2009.

"I like everything about Ohio State, it's close to home, they have a great tradition and I know some of the guys currently playing for the Buckeyes."

Payne, who has a max bench press of 225-pounds, said his schedule for the next few months is up in the air.

"I haven't made any official visits yet," he said. "I got to see Akron and Toledo this summer when I went to their camps. I have been to a few of Ohio State games, so I know what Columbus is like, but I don't have any of my official visits planned.

"My Mom wants me to go to where I feel comfortable. I will probably be making my commitment in the next month or two."
