Rod McDowell rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown in Sumter's 31-21 loss to Byrnes in the Class 4A state championship game in Death Valley.
McDowell, who has been committed to Clemson since last February and is currently ranked as the No. 47 running back in the nation according to Scout.com, remains firm in his decision and will take no other visits in the recruiting process.
Here is an interview with McDowell shortly after his last high school game:
What did it feel like to play in Death Valley today for the first time?
McDowell: It felt excellent man. To score my first touchdown in Death Valley, it felt good. When I scored I felt like wow, there is more to come. To play right here in this type of environment is wonderful.
Tell us about the touchdown pass you had that got called back for a penalty.
McDowell: He called that play and I was like oh my goodness. I was thinking in my head don't mess up here in Death Valley man. When I threw it and AJ caught a touchdown I was like oh my god. I threw my first touchdown pass in Death Valley. It felt wonderful.
Tell us about the second touchdown you had where you ran around the edge.
McDowell: I was very determined. My offensive line gave me a good block up front. I was determined. It was going to be a dog fight. I was like Roderick you play hard or go home. Even though we didn't get the win I know we gave 110 percent.
Do you leave with your head held high after fighting so hard and never giving up tonight?
McDowell: I take my hat off to Byrnes. Byrnes is a good program. I give it to them. Those boys fight no matter what. We came in and knew it was going to be a dog fight. We came in and didn't lay down for nobody. The score speaks for itself, 31-21. My head is going to be high no matter what.
How did you enjoy the Clemson - South Carolina game last weekend in Death Valley?
McDowell: It was phenomenal man. The environment here with coach Dabo. It was phenomenal. The way he transformed this program is wonderful. I was excited when it was announced that he was the head coach. I know for a fact that I have more than a coach. I am going to have a father figure and a friend no matter what.
Are you going to take any other visits?
McDowell: I am solid. Orange all the way.
