ALA-MISS Practice Report 5

The weather in Mobile has been wet throughout the week, but the cold front finally hit early Thursday morning. Players from the Mississippi team were freezing and ready to get off the field when the final whistle blew. Scout.com spoke with one highly-touted player about a new hire in the SEC.

The receivers were having a tough time catching the ball in the cold weather, but Tyler Russell was certainly putting the ball on target each time. Chad Bumphis and Pat Patterson made a couple of nice catches.

Chad Bumphis, four-star wide receiver from Tupelo, has been singled out by almost every player as one of the most impressive prospects on the field. Bumphis is lining up as a receiver and will play quarterback as well. The guy is definitely a dual-threat. He threw a nice, deep pass to Kevin Norwood, but the pass was broken up by a defender.

Bumphis' top schools have been Florida, Alabama, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The Bulldogs may have taken the lead for his services.

"I was real excited about coach [Dan] Mullen going to Mississippi State," Bumphis said. "He was the main reason I liked Florida. It's real big for Mississippi State. I am real excited about it."

Aubrey Phillips continued to move very well on the offensive line. Fletcher Cox and Jonathan Billups stood out on the defensive line. Josh Boyd worked out well, but you could tell he was really cold.

Khairi Usher continues to impress, while Charles Harris made a few nice plays in the secondary as well.

The running backs haven't really emerged until Thursday morning. LaDarius Perkins displayed some really good bursts of speed. Tracy Lampley made several nice catches out of the backfield for yardage.

The afternoon practice locations remain uncertain with the weather conditions in Mobile getting much worse. The temperature is dropping rapidly with sleet falling in the morning session.
