Franco Talks About Walking On

San Pedro (Calif.) linebacker Robert Franco (6-1, 225) took an official visit to UCLA this past weekend, and while he didn't get an offer from the Bruins, he's still leaning towards playing there.

"They just told me that they want me to walk-on and I'm pretty much thinking I'm going to do that because that's where I've always wanted to go," said Franco. "I could probably earn a scholarship pretty quick. If I do real good when I come in, I could be able to earn a scholarship."

Franco has scholarship offers from New Mexico State, UC Davis, Cal Poly and Washington State.

He said: "I had an offer from Washington State, but I don't think it's there anymore. I tripped to New Mexico State and it was cool. I liked it there and Coach (DeWayne) Walker seems like he's really going to turn that program around. I'm still considering New Mexico State too. I'm planning to trip to Cal Poly too, but I don't know when. Maybe this weekend. After that, I'll pretty much be able to decide for sure what I'll do. But it's pretty much UCLA."

The visit to UCLA all but sealed Franco's desire to be a Bruin. "It went good, I really liked it there," said Franco. "My host was Frank Guzman and I just met a lot of the players and I felt at home with everyone else. Some of the recruits that were also on the trip, I really got along with them. I felt pretty good and comfortable around them. Overall it was a great trip."

The highlight for Franco was a dinner at coach Rick Neuheisel's home on Saturday evening. "We had dinner at Coach Neuheisel's house and it was real nice," said Franco. "Then I spent a lot of time talking with the coaches, with Coach Neuheisel and Coach (Chuck) Bullough. It was pretty good. Coach Bullough said he was pretty impressed with how much size I've gained since last summer. I was 215 but now I'm 235. Coach Bullough projects me as a MIKE or WILL. I'm pretty solid as my size goes. I don't think I got a lot of offers early because of my size, but it's not really a factor now."

So Franco will spend the next few days making his final decision, but all signs are pointing to Westwood.

"I'll probably end up at UCLA. It's closer to home and I'm looking for that opportunity to play there," said Franco.
