"I have excellent speed and hands."
"I'm going to get in shape by running track, workout out," said Kevin Norwood. "Just do what I need to keep from getting out of shape."
Norwood played both ways at wide receiver and safety, leading the D'Iberville Warriors to the state championship game. He hauled in 64 receptions for 1,101 yards with 14 touchdowns. At safety Norwood had 10 interceptions. Also used for special teams, Norwood had more than 600 yards on kickoff returns.
Norwood was named All-State, All-Coast, and Defensive Player of the Year by the Sun Herald. However his future with the Tide is seen at wide receiver.
"I'd like to go in and play right away," said Norwood. "I have excellent speed and hands (to play receiver). To improve my game, I need to get my route running stronger."
Norwood's hometown of D'Iberville is on the Gulf Coast. If he hadn't chosen Alabama he thinks he would have stayed closer to home.
"I'd have probably gone to USM," said Norwood.
With Norwood's busy schedule he hasn't had much of a chance to stay in touch with his future teammates.
"I don't really talk to anybody," he asid. "On my official visit (1/9/09) my player host was Demetrius Goode. We hung out, had a good time. Every now and then (Javier) Arenas calls to check up on me."
Norwood committed to the Tide on 12/16/08.
"I was a little concerned even after I committed thinking about all the wide receivers recruits they were bringing in this year," said Norwood. "But after talking to Coach Saban I feel a lot better about everything. It gave me a lot of confidence about my decision."
"On my visit I talked with Coach Burns about playing wide receiver and some of the things we're going to try to do on offense next year."
As Norwood prepares himself physically for the rigors of the SEC, he's also working on his grades.
"I just need to focus and stay focused," said Norwood.
If available he hopes to wear jersey No. 24 for the Crimson Tide next season.
