Stud Texas DT Bears' First 2010 Commit

Houston (Tex.) Eisenhower defensive tackle Jay Guy holds double-digit offers. Furthermore, many more schools are close to offering, yet Guy decided to make a surprisingly early verbal commitment to the California Golden Bears. Cal Sports Digest caught up with him on Thursday night and he tells us he is high on Cal but…

First Cal verbal of 2010 still plans on taking his visits…

Jay Guy (6-0, 315) holds offers from Stanford, Texas A&M, Army, Kansas State, California, Michigan, Baylor, Missouri, and SMU among others, the list was still growing by the day. Nonetheless, he verbally committed to California on Thursday amidst a steady barrage of colleges continuing to vie for his pledge.

"Cal is a great school and ranked No. 1 in education," Guy said about choosing the Golden Bears. "And [The coaches] want me to play right away."

In Guy, the Bears land one of the top defensive tackles in Texas. However, he says he is still not completely shutting down his recruitment.

"I still got to take my visits and I still will look at other schools," Guy added. "It's more of a soft verbal."

He says he is focused on Cal, but he will look at four other schools during his recruitment: Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, and UCLA. However, only one of those four have offered thus far.

"UCLA offered me," said Guy. "And I'm talking to Oklahoma State [coaches] tomorrow on the phone but they haven't offered yet."

Earlier this week Guy talked to Scout.com about his interest in Ohio State and Oklahoma.

"I just sent my tape and transcript to Ohio State. The coach came down recently because one of my teammates (Kenneth Guiton) just signed with them. I am on their radar.

"I wouldn't mind visiting Oklahoma. I have never been to Norman before and would like to check it out. Coach (Bob) Stoops came by our school to see [2009 OU signee] Jaz [Reynolds]. It was right before signing day. I didn't get the chance to talk with him, but I think that he talked to my coach about me. I would like to get in touch with them and see how they want to use me."

Guy believes the Bear coaches will be okay with him continuing his recruitment. "They know I got to check out all my options," he said.

Academically, Guy will fit right in at Berkeley. He reports a 3.6 core GPA, and he scored a 1450 on his SAT.
