Sooners center stage for Gilbert…still

Recruiting coverage at SoonersIllustrated is still going as we look to bring fans the latest in Oklahoma recruiting news. Today, we caught up athlete Justin Gilbert from Huntsville, Texas. He took in the Sooner spring game this past weekend and had this to report.

First impressions, as the cliché is stated, goes a long way. So when Huntsville (TX) athlete Justin Gilbert touched down in Norman, Oklahoma this past weekend, he was not sure what to expect.

But, he walked away knowing one thing for sure.

"For me, they (Oklahoma) is No. 1 for me honestly," Gilbert said. "I got there and had a couple of the coaches take me around and show me the campus. I like how the school is compact in that you can walk almost everywhere, you don't have to use a car. This was my first time there and everything was nice."

Gilbert, along with some friends and high school coaches, arrived on Friday and that is when they toured the campus, facilities, and the stadium. Then Saturday was the day of the spring game and Gilbert took that scene in as well.

And let him tell it, it was a new experience as well.

"The stadium was amazing and there were a lot (28,592) of people inside," Gilbert said. "It's like everyone in the town supports the Sooners. They (fans) were wearing Oklahoma shorts and caps. It seemed like they (the team) was an NFL squad with their fan base. I like that."

While on his visit, Gilbert said he met all of the coaches and spoke to most of them. But his recruiter, coach James Patton, is the coach he has been in most contact with up to this point. So obviously, that would not change heading into the spring game.

"I had been emailing coach (James) Patton for a while, but this past weekend I got to talk with him in person while I was there." Gilbert said. "He is a cool guy and I could see myself being around him a lot."

In the end, it was the white team that won 63-36 in the spring game, but Gilbert was just excited to be a part of the scene. In fact, during warm-ups and at times during the game, he was paying attention to the wide receivers position to see how the Sooner players run routes and catch the ball.

Of course, Gilbert is not sure what position he will play should he attend Oklahoma. But that is his chosen spot as of now.

"I asked coach while I was there what position I would play. And he asked me what position do I want to play," Gilbert said. "I guess that means it's on me. If I had a choice, I would probably choose receiver. I'm pretty good in the open field and I can get open. I'm not a big target, but a good one for picking up yards."

As of now, Gilbert stands 6-foot, 180-pounds and plays on both sides of the ball for the Hornets' squad. Some of his other offers include: Utah, SMU, Baylor, Colorado, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and TCU.

And though there were several things that set Oklahoma apart from the pack, there are a few key points that Gilbert chose to mention.

"I like coach (bob) Stoops. He has a good character and I like the fact that he has been a winning coach for all of these years," Gilbert said. "I also like the football team and the location. It's not too far, but not too close. Overall, I enjoyed myself this weekend."
