"I think what coaches like the most about me is my aggression and the passion I have for the game. I think they like the way I attack the ball and the passion and energy I play with," said Thomas. "The thing I want to work on this summer is my speed definitely; I also need to work on my hips and my back pedal speed as well."
Thomas says that he has an appreciation for the greats that played the game before him. He often watches NFL games and takes what he sees and adds it to his own game.
"I really like to emulate Ray Lewis and Sean Taylor. Those are two guys that I really looked up to since I was in the 6th grade. Those are two guys that played with passion and intensity and that is really what I try to bring to the field in my game," said Thomas.
Coming off a junior season that saw him amass 85 tackles, ten sacks, and one interception, Thomas is receiving a boat load of high major interest.
"I have offers from Toledo, Indiana, Illinois, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Louisville, Missouri, and Bowling Green. Penn State, Michigan, LSU, UCLA and Louisville are schools that are showing me a lot of interest right now," said Thomas.
Thomas says that he is very interested in Louisville and the Cardinals are really turning up the heat on his recruitment. So what link does Earnest have to Louisville and what does he know about the program?
"I know a little bit about Louisville and I have watched them play. Coach Ron English was recruiting me when he was at Michigan so when he went to Louisville I really started to pay attention to them. And I watching them on TV I think that it is definitely a place I can fit in," said Thomas.
Other than attending a spring recruiting combine, Thomas has not made any visits. That is about to change as Thomas is ready to start a tour of several of his interested suitors.
"This past year I went to visit Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, Georgia, and Cincinnati. I have not made any trips yet this spring but I did attend a player's camp. I am going to Illinois next weekend for their spring game, and I am going to Toledo this weekend. We are supposed to be going down to Penn State as well as Louisville and UCLA," said Thomas.
On the collegiate level, Thomas is getting looks at a couple different positions on defense.
"Right now most teams are recruiting me for two positions. When I talk to DB coaches they tell me they want me for safety, but when I talk to linebacker coaches they say they like me as a linebacker. So I guess I will get that figured out when I get there and they can put me where they need me the most," said Thomas.
Looking for the right fit as he narrows his options is something Thomas says will be very important in his ultimate decision.
"I want to see how I fit in the system of the school that I am looking at. Also a chance to play early will be big as well where if I could not be on the field as a freshman at least by my sophomore year. Also academically I want to go to a school that is big on academics as well," said Thomas. "The coaching staff will be important to me because I know I am going to a place where I know the coach I am playing for is going to get the most out of me."
With all the attention he is receiving, Thomas says a decision timetable remains up in the air.
"At first we were looking at possibly making an early decision, but now there are a lot of better schools starting to look at me," Thomas said. "So right now I am not really sure when I am looking to make a decision. I am not a person to drag out a decision so if me and my mom see the right school then I would go ahead and make my commitment. At this point I am not really ready to say I have any favorites. I am interested in everybody that is interested in me."
