Centennial HS (Roswell, GA) offensive lineman David Yankey is no stranger to the South Carolina campus. USC was the first school to offer the three-star prospect. And he was last in Columbia for the Gamecocks' junior day in February.
Thursday, he made a return visit.
"It was really good. It was about the fourth time I've been up there, so I already know all the facilities," Yankey said. "So I was just getting to know Coach [Eric] Wolford, the O-line coach, and Coach [G.A.] Mangus better. My dad went with me. And also coach [Jeff] Measor and a defensive coordinator too, and a couple of guys. So, it was really cool just getting to know them a little bit more. And I got to see the Medical School and that stuff."
Yankey hopes go into the medical field as possibly an Orthopedic Surgeon or something in sports medicine. He plans to major in Biology or Chemistry and go through a Pre-Med program, so academics are very important to the multi-talented student-athlete.
"I've seen the athletic facility [before]," he said. "And I also got to talk to one of the team doctors about sports medicine and Pre-Med and all that stuff.
"It's a good school and I liked the visit a lot. There's a medical school real close, so it's all good."
Yankey also enjoyed his time getting to know his recruiter of record, Mangus, and potential future position coach, Wolford. Yankey actually worked out for Mangus when the USC quarterbacks coach was the offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State.
"They're really cool," he said of the two coaches. "They're funny. I can joke around with them, but I also know they're serious and they want to win."
The Nation's No. 43 offensive tackle according to Scout.com, at one time had a top four of South Carolina, Duke, Florida and Stanford, in no particular order. But with recent offers from Georgia and Clemson, and interest from LSU, Yankey says he is wide open.
"I don't really have (a favorite) anymore," he said. "A bunch more schools started coming in and recruiting me especially towards in the end of the school year in May. Coach Measor also advised me just to calm down and not try to worry about that, narrow it down towards the end of the summer before the season, then go through the season, then try to make a decision later."
Yankey recently visited Georgia, which offered in mid-May.
"I visited on Tuesday and it was really nice up there," he said. "I liked Coach Richt a lot. I was with Coach [Stacy] Searels a lot. And he's a pretty good guy. We got to see a lot of what the O-line does and also the academic side, and Georgia is a pretty good school as well
Yankey also has offers from programs like Florida, Tennessee, Stanford, UCLA, Wake Forest, North Carolina State, Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse and Mississippi State.
Yankey also plans to visit Clemson later this summer. While Georgia and South Carolina were the first two stops, his current road trip will conclude with visits to UNC and Duke Friday and Wake Forest Saturday. Yankey then plans on having a top two, three or four schools by the end of the summer.
Despite not claiming any favorites, Yankey says overall USC the visit helped the Gamecocks chances, though he doesn't plan on making a decision any time soon.
"I like them. It's a good school. I like the coaches. And they're making a lot of good changes."
