Summer update with DE Dezmond Johnson
"I have been lifting and running a lot with the team," added Dezmond Johnson. "But I have not been to any football camps lately. I have just been lifting with the team. I actually just came back from the AAU held at Duke. I play for the Tennessee Tigers. We came in fourth. We also went to Louisville and made it to the Elite 8 out of 100 teams. We did pretty good."
Johnson is having fun playing hoops, but he knows where his future lies.
"I pretty much have no shot to play basketball in college. I am too short. The power forwards in college, you have to be at least 6' 8" to play. I am just not big enough."
Height is not an issue on the football field as his 6' 5", 210 frame is just what the college recruiters are looking for in a defensive end.
"The latest football visit I went to was Tennessee's camp in early June. I just have been doing so much traveling in basketball. I have not had time to attend any football camps. But I am about to start making some. I am going to try and make the one at Vandy and Ole Miss. Hopefully I can make it to one last one after those two, but I do not know who yet."
What is going on with Ole Miss?
"I talked to Ole Miss Sunday. We caught up. Coach Austin just wanted to see how I was doing. He asked me how my recruiting was going. I try and call all of the schools who have offered me."
And which schools have offered?
"Ole Miss, Duke, Arkansas State, and MTSU. Tennessee, Clemson, Purdue, Vandy, and North Carolina are also showing me a lot of interest. They are getting close."
What did Clemson say?
"They are trying to get me to come over to the campus and meet the coaches and see what it is about."
"They said I was still a top guy, and they said my name is brought up in every recruiting meeting. They said they are pretty close to offering me."
"The same things. Coach Mogridge said everyone was just getting back in from vacation. He just bought a house and was moving into it. He just basically said that my name is being brought up in the recruiting meeting all of the time, and I was getting really close to getting an offer."
Which school is showing the most interest?
"Really, all of t hem show the same amount of interest. Ole Miss and MTSU are showing the most though. I get the most letters from them. Duke and Purdue are also showing a lot of interest."
What is Duke saying?
"They are just sending a lot of info about their school and athletic facilities and about how much they want me. Purdue is saying the same things."
A decision will probably be made after his senior season.
"I told the recruiters I will make it after I take my official visits. I want to play ball and then focus on all of that."
