Xavier Ruben, a 6'3" 300 pound guard, out of Baytown Lee High School, decided that Baylor is where he wants to play his college football. With offers from Alabama and Baylor, the east Texas standout performed well at Baylor's camp on Saturday, and decided that Baylor was the place he wanted to be.
"I felt at home with the coaches," says Ruben.
"Baylor was nice. I think their indoor practice facility is almost ready. I think that is going to turn out pretty good."
Ruben provided that Baylor defensive backs coach McCloud was a key factor in his recruitment, and another factor played in his decision as well. Ruben will be playing with longtime friend and Baytown Lee teammate Tim Smith.
"It is going to be cool. It is going to be another four years playing with him. Hopefully there is no difference in college. It felt like we were at home [at Baylor camp]."
Tim Smith, another mammoth offensive lineman for Baytown Lee, plays offensive tackle and measures 6'4" and just under 285. Smith also decided that Baylor is where he wants to play his college football. With offers from several schools, including Kansas State, UTEP, and Rice, Smith talked about why Baylor is his choice.
"The facilities, the coaching staff, I love the coaching staff. I met some of the players, and they are really nice. Education-wise Baylor is top notch. You know, just all of the above."
Smith considers he and Ruben's friendship and playing abilities as the "ying and the yang", and Smith looks forward to playing with his current high school teammate.
Both Ruben and Smith explain that they are planning on getting stronger and quicker for the upcoming season.
