'Dogs Offer Three-Star DE

El Cajon (Calif.) Valhalla defensive end Shane Pennix now has five scholarship offers with his latest coming from Fresno State. Scout.com's No. 78 defensive tackle also has offers from UCLA, San Diego State, Arizona State and UNLV...

"I'm really only looking at the schools that have offered me," said Shane Pennix (6-3, 256). "My top two are UCLA and Arizona State."

The Bruins and Sun Devils now lead solidly over San Diego State.

Pennix says that UCLA is recruiting him the hardest. "They me write handwritten letters and are always asking about my family and how I'm doing," he said. "Coach Rick Neuheisel emails me and just keeps in touch the most. They really show they care about getting to know me and that they want me."

Pennix says he plans on attending a few Bruin games during the season, but doesn't have any planned yet.

"They said that I could start as a true freshman," he said of the Bruins. "They said they'd use me on a lot of different schemes.

"I really like coach Neuheisel and I think the team is still rebuilding and getting better," he said. "They have been working really hard this summer and I think they are going to be much better than they were last year. I can't wait to see them play."

Pennix attended the Bruins' camp during the summer. He also attended the USC camp, but the Trojans have not offered.

He's also already visited both Arizona State and San Diego State as well. "I really like the defense at ASU," he said. "They run a lot of blitzes and play smash mouth football.

"The coaches there have some good experience too," he said. "And I like the defensive schemes they run."

Although Pennix admits the Aztecs are a distant third for the time being, he says he hasn't ruled San Diego State out. "It's a good program," he said. "I wouldn't mind going there. They have a lot to offer.

"They are rebuilding too," Pennix said. "They've had some bad seasons recently and they just need to start getting some bigger recruits to come in and help them rebuild. They have really good new coaches, so I think they'll be able to get back up there."

Pennix says he only plans on taking a few official visits before pulling the trigger. "I'll probably start setting up some trips next month," he said. "I'm thinking of only taking three…right now I'll probably only visit UCLA, Arizona State and San Diego State."

But Pennix says he doesn't want to shut any doors too soon. "I plan to blow up this year," he said. "And I want to wait a bit because I'll probably be getting more offers. I want to see what happens.

"I know that Oregon and Cal have been recruiting me a lot and want to see me play this year," he said. "And USC has been sending some mail too."

Pennix admits that he'd especially like to get an offer from the Ducks.

"The things I'm looking for are a great campus," he said. "A great program and a defense that fits me. I also want to play for good coaches and where they have a good relationship with the players.

"Really I want to go where I feel the most at home," he emphasized.

Valhalla High School opens their 2009 season by hosting Our Lady of Good Counsel High School from Olney, Md., on Sept. 4.

Pennix plans on majoring in business and reports a 2.7 core GPA. He says he didn't take the SAT in June as he had originally planned and now says he'll be taking it in October.
