Elliott Hoping To Win A State Title

Cleveland [Oh.] Glenville senior defensive end Jayrone Elliott once again helped lead his team to victory in the Ohio high school state playoffs, beating Massillon 31-17. Elliott, who preserved the win the previous week by blocking a potential game-tying extra point, spoke to Bill Greene about the win over Massillon.

Cleveland [Oh.] Glenville senior defensive end Jayrone Elliott has had an impressive senior campaign and will play his final game this Saturday as the Tarblooders go for their first state championship.

Elliott, 6-foot-3, 215-pounds, and his teammates will battle Hilliard Davidson at Fawcett Stadium in Canton for the Ohio Division-I state title. Last Saturday Elliott was a key figure in a semi-final win over Massillon 31-17, registering ten tackles.

"This win over Massillon puts us in a place where no Glenville team has ever gone," Elliott said. "It means so much to our school and our community. Right now, we are the most successful team in Glenville history. Next week, we have a chance to be state champions. That's a great way for me to end my career at Glenville."

This season started with a disappointing to loss to Cleveland St. Ignatius, but Glenville turned the tables on the Wildcats three weeks ago, knocking them out of the playoffs with a convincing win.

"This season definitely didn't start the way we wanted, but we've got things going really well right now," he stated. "I can think back to last February when we were working out in the weight room, and talking about playing for a championship, and now it's here. That's pretty special."

"I'm so proud to be a part of the first team to play for a championship," he admitted. "There have been some great teams in the past at Glenville, but this is a great thing for our seniors. This has been a total team effort and our younger players have been great also. I couldn't imagine playing at another school."

As one of the top defensive ends in Ohio, Elliott has been a target for several college recruiters. He has collected over ten offers.

"I'm still sitting on 12 offers right now, and there might be a few more coming," Elliott stated. "I'm really not too focused on recruiting right now, because I want to win a state title and leave the recruiting go until after the season. I have offers from Michigan State, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Syracuse, Minnesota, Connecticut, Indiana as well as a lot of the MAC schools."

"I was at Michigan State's camp last summer and I liked it a lot," he said. "I also think a lot of Cincinnati because they're a team on the rise right now. Connecticut seems like a place I could play early. I don't have any date in mind to make my decision at all, and I will be giving it a lot more thought after this Saturday, but you could the three schools I mentioned as my favorites."
