South Showcase Combine: Anthony Gardner

Anthony Gardner, running back from Pleasant Grove, Ala., participated in South Showcase Combine at Gadsden (Ala.) City High School this past weekend. No. 60 came to compete with the big boys and walked away as the combine MVP.

"I had a lot of fun at the combine this weekend," said Anthony Gardner. "That was one of the best combines I have been to. There was a lot of competition there. I had a real good time."

Gardner was impressive in all the combine testing drills and ran an impressive 4.38 in the 40-yard dash. He started spring practice Monday afternoon with at least one coach popping in for the day.

"We started spring practice today," he said. "It was good for the first day. Coach Adams from Southern Miss was out there. I know a coach from Samford came by last week. I know more coaches are planning to come by."

The Golden Eagles have been keeping close tabs on Gardner for a while.

"Southern Miss is saying they are really looking at me," he said. "They want me to come to their camp in Columbus. Their head coach likes me, and the running backs coach wants to work with me. They have one more spot for a running back. Hopefully I can fill it."

Gardner is eager to see his first scholarship offer, and the outstanding combine performance should increase his chances.

The South Showcase Combine teamed with Impact Training from Rainbow City, Ala. for the event at Gadsden City High School.
