Four Star Safety Planning Duke Visit

As the recruiting season continues, the Blue Devils are looking to add more and more talent including some big fish. One potential target is the nation's No. 7 rated safety in the class of 2011 who spoke to TDD recently.

Columbus (Ohio) Eastmore Academy standout Ron Tanner knows how to fill a stat sheet. As a junior he recorded 83 tackles, seven interceptions, two fumbles caused and one fumble recovered. And that was just on defense.

He also played quarterback and had over 1,200 yards passing and 12 touchdowns. He rushed for five touchdowns. So it's no wonder the Blue Devils are interested and have reached out. For those early efforts, look for the four star prospect to visit Durham soon.

"I have been in contact with several of the Duke coaches and I like them all a lot," said Tanner. "I haven't visited the campus yet, but will be making a trip to North Carolina this summer."

Currently holding nearly 20 confirmed scholarship offers, Tanner will have his pick of schools. However he's concentrating his search on schools with a certain formula.

"The three biggest factors for me are academics, finding early playing time, and the quality of the overall program. With baseball going into late May, I was a little late starting the recruiting process this summer, so I don't have a top 10 right now."

For their part, the Blue Devil coaching staff has been consistent with Tanner in hopes of outlining the changes being made in Durham as the program looks to gain a foothold in the ACC.

"They have a new defensive system and have been talking to me about how they see me fitting in. I am hoping to learn more."

Tanner reports a bench press max of 265 pounds, a squat of 405, and has a 35 inch vertical jump. When he arrives at his school of choice he hopes to major in business or, perhaps, a pre-law program. Currently he has a 3.8 grade point average in his core subjects.
