Scout Notebook: Jacksonville

Scout was in Jacksonville on Thursday checking out many of the top prospects for the Class of 2011 and 2012. Read on for the report.

Nease: You'll have a hard time finding a better group of defensive ends anywhere in Florida. Max Chapman (Northwestern) and Matt Roth (Virginia Tech) are both major college prospects who had solid junior seasons in 2009. They're the top two senior prospects. The junior class is led by athlete JoJo Brooks (6-0/185) and DB Denzell Hayden (5-8/165). Brooks claims offers from South Carolina, Clemson, and USF while Hayden claims offers from South Carolina, Clemson, and UCF.

Fletcher: The top prospect appears to be OL Derrick Thorpe (6-4/280), a very athletic prospect who can do a number of things up front. His top four are Clemson, South Carolina, USF, and Arkansas. RB Mitchell Hester is one of the best backs in north Florida and plans to visit Arkansas, Illinois, and USF. Among the juniors, keep an eye on WR Joe Lawrence (6-0/180), who will be a Div 1 prospect next year.

Episcopal: The top prospect is junior LB Shakeel Rashad, a 6-2/210 athlete. He claims offers from North Carolina, Wake Forest, and UCF already and will be a major college prospect for the 2012 class.

St. Augustine: Quarterback Kyle West is a bubble Division 1 kid who has had a tremendous prep career. WR Markis Merrill is the top senior prospect and he claims offers from Marshall, Georgia, Michigan State, Troy, and Arkansas.

Menendez: The top prospect is five-star LB Tony Steward, who has official visits set to Clemson, Florida State, and UCLA. I have him rated as the No. 2 player in Florida. DL Ryan Bryson (6-4/280) tore his hamstring at the end of last season but is a nice prospect and has nine offers. For 2012, keep an eye on safety Ryan Dentmon.
