Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe has just raised the bar when it comes to scholarship announcements.
With cameras rolling, Cutcliffe aimed the spotlight, pulled back the curtains and delivered in spectacular fashion as walk-on DE Danny Doyle’s parents “happened” to call Cutcliffe during a team meeting on Tuesday. Cutcliffe handed the phone to Doyle and watched his player receive the news from his parents that he had just been offered a scholarship to Duke, where tuition ain't cheap.
The team erupted in cheerful congratulations for their teammate during the call. The scholarship Doyle received is awarded to an improving junior that has displayed significant growth. While Doyle has lacked playing experience during his first two years with the program he has picked it up with a couple bright spots here and there, one of them a fumble recovery in the spring game.
Cutcliffe and the coaching staff have elevated him in the depth chart heading into this season as well.
