Report: Big 12 narrows expansion list down to 12 schools

League is likely to only expand to 12 teams, according to ESPN.

The Big 12 conference has narrowed its list of expansion candidates, ESPN reports.

The 12 schools still under consideration are Air Force, BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Colorado State, UConn, Houston, Rice, South Florida, SMU, Temple and Tulane.

ESPN also cited sources who said the league would likely add just two more schools rather than four.

Schools under consideration that didn't make the cut included Arkansas State, Boise State, East Carolina, New Mexico, Northern Illinois, San Diego State and UNLV, sources told the network. It's unclear if Memphis is still in the running.

"While it is obviously not the decision we were hoping for, I am confident ECU put forth its best effort during this process," East Carolina athletic director Jeff Compher said in a statement Wednesday. "Through a determined approach, we were able to tell our story to not only the Big 12 but the entire nation."

The Big 12 hopes to present a formal recommendation on expansion to its board of directors by Oct. 17.
