Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin might well be the hottest assistant in college football right now, and the Crimson Tide are going to make sure he is well compensated.
The University of Alabama trustees approved a new deal that will pay Kiffin $1.4 million through February 28, 2017, per John Zenor of the AP. The deal doubles the 41-year-old Kiffin’s salary.
The former head coach at USC had been collecting money from his buyout until June of this year after being fired by the Trojans in 2013.
Kiffin has built an explosive offense that features a powerful running game and passing threats that can spread the field. Despite having three new quarterbacks in three years, Kiffin has kept the offense flowing and has been a big reason Alabama reached the College Football Playoff the past two seasons -- including winning a shootout against Clemson in last season’s championship game.
The deal could also be Alabama’s attempt at keeping Kiffin in Tuscaloosa, as his name will most likely pop up for head coaching vacancies following the season.
