Fresno State Wins 35-28 in Overtime

Fresno State wins Saturday at San Diego State 35-28 in an overtime thriller to improve to 7-0.

With three seconds remaining in regulation, San Diego State lined up for a field goal with the score tied 28-28. As the ball left kicker Seamu McMorrow's foot from 37 yards out, 6-foot-6 Bulldog Marcel Jensen tipped the ball as it floated into the end zone short of the goal post.

A 15 yard chop block penalty did not keep the Bulldogs from scoring a touchdown first in overtime, and the defense soon found themselves in a similar position with a chance to finish the game. On fourth down, safety Derron Smith broke up a pass in the end zone as the Bulldogs avoided the upset and improved to 7-0.

For the first time this season, Fresno State's offense struggled to get into rhythm. San Diego State kept Carr guessing by disguising blitzes and playing the most effective man coverage the Bulldogs have faced. In the first half, San Diego State more than doubled the Bulldogs' yards as Fresno State was held to just 98 yards in the first 30 minutes. The Aztecs failed to take advantage, missing a field goal and failing on a fourth down attempt, sending the two teams into halftime with an even 7-7 score.

The Bulldogs faced a 14-7 second half deficit before they finally got the offense rolling. Carr led back-to-back touchdown drives, each capped by a touchdown pass to Davante Adams, to take a 21-14 lead early in the fourth quarter.

SDSU promptly moved into scoring position to try to tie the game, but Jonathan Norton forced a fumble, recovered and returned 78 yards by Ejiro Ederaine for a touchdown after some initial confusion on the fumble from both teams. Suddenly the Bulldogs had rattled off 21 unanswered points and seemed to have the game under control with 9:51 remaining.

It took less than a minute for the Aztecs to drive 39 yards for a touchdown to bring the game back within a touchdown. San Diego State surprised the Bulldogs with an onside kick and successfully recovered. Six plays and 49 yards later the two teams were tied at 28.
