We’re at the halfway point of the season and the Bulldogs are 1-6 heading into the game against Utah State. Frustration is mounting with the Red Wave and for good reason. The season hasn’t quite turned out like everyone would have hoped for, leaving everyone to wonder if head coach DeRuyter’s days are numbered and for how long.

Fresno state has struggled all season to find its identity and will continue to do so. Virgil and the offense continues with its struggles which leads to the insertion of Kline into the offense. But it’s still not enough to turn the game around as the defense gives up to many yards on the ground leading to a Utah State victory.

It's official: Fresno State's season is now on the line.

Granted, some of you probably felt the Bulldogs' year hung in the balance during the UNLV or Nevada games. But at 1-6, a loss places FS out of bowl contention for the second season year in a row, plus guarantees a third straight sub .500 season under head coach Tim DeRuyter.

Utah State has had its share of struggles, particularly with finishing games and establishing any momentum on offense. But the big key for the Aggies will be the 3-4 scheme USU plans to throw at the FS line, the same line that added this blemish recently to what's been an inconsistent showing in 2016: a a 7-on-4 scenario versus San Diego State's defensive line, but Chason Virgil still going down for the sack. Expect USU to bring the house on defense against this offensive line.

It has been three straight weeks of coming up short by Utah State, but this weekend shapes to be an opportunity for the Aggies to grab a win. Despite a 2-4 record, they are more than two-touchdown favorites over Fresno State, further emphasizing how far the ‘Dogs have fallen.

Utah State does not appear to have much stand-out talent statistically on its offense, but a big group of players that have chipped in. Fresno State is still struggling to find anyone to spark the offense after scoring only three points versus San Diego State.

This game rings similarly to the Bulldogs’ trip to Reno earlier this year. Utah State is a very beatable opponent, but the Bulldogs have few weapons to take advantage. Ultimately, this game comes down to Utah State’s performance. If the Aggies just play a decent game they will come away with a win and probably by double digits. If USU comes out flat after their three straight losses, it will open a window for Fresno State to get its first FBS win of the season.
