Placekicker Ammon Lakip Receives New Offer

A special year has translated into a fifth scholarship offer for senior Ammon Lakip, a placekicker from Chattahoochee (GA) high school. The Cougars recently won the 5A State championship with their first undefeated season. Ammon's most recent offer comes from Georgia Tech.

Ammon Lakip has been in contact with Georgia Tech but the offer still came as a surprise. "I had been talking to them this year about being a walk-on but the day after we won the championship I got a call from Coach (Lamar) Owens." Owens put Coach Paul Johnson on the phone and told him that they were offering him a scholarship.

The Tech coaches also scheduled a visit to Chattahoochee High School to see Ammon. "I was supposed to get a visit today but school was canceled so it didn't happen."

The offer from Georgia Tech was one of five that he's received. "I have offers from Maryland, Utah, Air Force, and Auburn." Lakip will begin taking visits this weekend. "I will be going to Maryland this weekend and to Utah in January." He is not sure if he will visit Auburn and Air Force. "Auburn has talked to me about going there as a gray shirt."

Playing time will be an important factor when Ammon makes his college choice. "I don't want to sit and watch while a veteran junior does the kicking." He is looking for a good business school and wants to stay close to home.

Lakip hopes to make that decision by the end of January. "I'll probably make it at the last minute before signing day."

Place kicking was not always in the picture for Ammon. "I was offered a soccer scholarship by Clemson my junior year and was pretty settled with that but then I realized how much I like football."

Lakip began place kicking his junior year.

It has been said more than once that kickers are different. Ammon doesn't want to be that stereotype. "I'm pretty competitive and love making tackles," said Ammon. "I sometimes see myself as a wide receiver." Top Stories
