One of Nation's Top Corners Weighing Options

St. Pius High School (Atlanta) athlete Geno Smith is considered one of the top defensive backs in the south. The 18 verbal offers that he's received thus far is proof of that.

Geno Smith is not lacking for schools showing interest in him. "Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia Tech Georgia, Florida and a few others have sent me mail and I've talked to the coaches at those schools."

Both in-state schools have already offered Smith. "Coach Speed from Georgia Tech has been talking with me and he has given me a verbal offer."

Coach Speed has been talking to Smith about Tech and how it would be a perfect fit for him. "It is close to home and they have a business management program and they do a lot to get their players ready for the business world." Smith has received info about the job fair that Coach Paul Johnson held for the graduating players. "It was nice to read about his getting them in contact with CEO's from businesses throughout the Atlanta area."

Smith has three or four schools that he feels are recruiting him harder than the others. "Alabama, Florida are the more recent ones and Georgia Tech has been recruiting me hard for quite some time."

All the schools with the exception of Notre Dame are recruiting him exclusively to play cornerback. "Notre Dame said I could pick which side of the ball that I wanted to play." Smith didn't hesitate when asked where he would like to play. "That's easy, I would rather play defense over offense."

Smith plays on both sides of the ball for St. Pius. "Last season was my first chance to play offense for the varsity and I think I did pretty well." Smith ran for 721 yards on 70 carries and scored 8 touchdowns. "Still, defense is where I would rather play."

Geno has yet to take any Junior Day visits. "I've been taking SAT prep classes but I will take my first visit to Tennessee on the 26th." Smith will then decide which of the schools he'll visit. "If I don't go to other Junior Days, I will be making trips to see their spring practices and maybe their spring games." Auburn, Florida, and Georgia are three that he might be attending.

In spite of having a lot of SEC schools on his list he doesn't have a preference for a conference. "I like them all and I will pick a school regardless of the conference."

One of the first things that Smith will be looking at in selecting a school will be his relationship with his position coach. "The big picture after college life is something that is also important to me." Smith is looking for a school that prepares him for life after college and football.

Smith is now spending his time running track for St. Pius. "Right now I am running the 100, 200, hurdles, and I'm doing the long jump." Smith already has a jump of 20 feet and 2 inches. Top Stories
