ACC's Top Teams Tangle at Russ Chandler

This weekend is the biggest series of the regular season for the Jackets. The top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers come to town for a three game series at Russ Chandler stadium. The Jackets are hoping to turn some heads with their play this weekend.

The Jackets had a rough go of it on Tuesday with a disappointing 9th inning loss to Kennesaw State. They'll need to regroup quickly though because the Virginia Cavaliers are charging into town. Although not unanimously, the Cavs are ranked #1 in several polls and are currently tied with the Jackets atop the ACC standings at 11-1 in ACC play. A series win for the Jackets would certainly capture the attention of college baseball enthusiasts.

The Joltin' Jackets are coming off a series win against the Duke Blue Devils in Durham. Errors cost Tech the game on Saturday to put an end to their perfect ACC record, but a win in the rubber match on Sunday secured the series. This weekend's series will take place in the friendly confines of Russ Chandler stadium where the Jackets hold a 16-4 record. The winner of this weekend's series will be in the driver's seat to take the ACC regular season crown.

The Cavaliers come into Atlanta having only lost 2 games all year and both were 1 run losses at home (to East Carolina and FSU). Georgia Tech leads the ACC in both hitting and pitching but the Wahoos sit second in both categories. Junior John Hicks leads the Hoos in hitting at a .362 clip and ace Danny Hultzen is throwing an eye-popping 1.36 ERA. UVA is not a team with a ton of power, but they still have a dangerous lineup and their stellar pitching makes it even more potent.

Serious ACC, and possibly national, implications are on the line this weekend down on the Flats. The two teams are relatively evenly matched and the Jackets are hoping the home crowd will push them over the edge to have a successful weekend. The Jackets will be battling Opening Weekend for the Braves down at Turner Field for attendance, but if Yellow Jacket fans can find a way to make it down to a game this weekend that could give the spark the team needs to try and topple the top team in the nation.
