Banks' Injury Could Give One School A Steal

Standing six-foot-seven and tipping the scales at nearly 300 pounds, Edmend Banks is not your typical defensive tackle prospect. A big prospect in every sense of the word, Banks has missed over half of his junior season due to a sprained meniscus and MCL injury that occurred on September 28 when one of his teammates fell on his knee.

Despite sitting out the majority of the 2011 season, Edmend Banks' size has already made him an intriguing prospect to college recruiters. Although he does not currently hold any offers, Banks is being pursued by some of the top programs in the south, including Georgia Tech, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and Auburn.

Of those schools, Georgia Tech is the only school that has received a visit from Banks this season. He was in Atlanta to watch the Yellow Jackets take on Kansas early in the season, and he enjoyed what he saw.

"It was a good visit," Banks said. "I really enjoyed it. I wish that I could have gone back to see the Clemson game because I know that atmosphere was crazy."

Georgia Tech inside linebackers coach Joe Speed has taken the lead in Banks' recruitment for the Yellow Jackets, and he has done a good job of staying in constant contact with the huge lineman.

"Coach Speed emails me. He keeps me updated on their games and everything like that."

When asked about early favorites in his recruitment, Banks commented that Auburn and Georgia Tech currently stand out amongst the schools pursuing him. It seems like he has run across a mini dilemma, however.

"Well, I really want to go away for college, but I really like Georgia Tech. Preferably, I'd like to go at least an hour or two away from home, but not too far."

While many schools have held off on offering because he has limited film for this season, Banks will have an opportunity to impress college recruiters this weekend, as he is expected to finally return from his injury that his kept him off the gridiron for over six weeks. Regardless, schools will have plenty of time to make their observations, as Banks does not plan on making a decision any time soon.

"I'll probably make my decision on signing day, so there is still a lot of time left in my recruitment." Top Stories
