Ryan's Ramblins - 2013 Recruiting Update - DT

GoJackets.com continues its series to help you get a view of the big picture in football recruiting. Next, we will take a look at the defensive tackle prospects.

Defensive Tackles

Current Depth Chart:

DT: T.J. Barnes, Shawn Green, Adam Gotsis

Current Seniority Chart:

1 senior – Barnes (R)
0 juniors –
1 sophomore – Green (R)
1 freshman – Gotsis

(R) = Redshirt

Notes: The only change to the depth chart from what was presented previously is that last year's recruit Adam Gotsis is now being shown as a tackle instead of defensive end. It is not set in stone where Gotsis will play. The depth chart at tackle is pretty well spread out in terms of seniority. Gotsis is a likely redshirt this coming season.

Expected 2013 Class Open Slots: 1
Current Commits: 0
Remaining Slots: 1
Prospects: Darius Commissiong, James Ellison, Michael Hill, Kelsey Griffin, Donovan Munger, and Jimal McBride.

Likelihood of committing is rated in 1 of 5 categories:

  1. We Lead
  2. We Like Our Chances
  3. Could Go Either Way
  4. Leaning Elsewhere
  5. Unlikely But Possible

DARIUS COMMISSIONG (6-3, 305 pounds) from Forestville, MD is an unrated prospect listed as a defensive tackle by Scout.com. Darius has early offers from GT, Boston College, Iowa, Maryland, Duke, UNC, NCSU, Purdue, Syracuse, VT, WF, WVU, East Carolina, and Massachusetts. He spent the Easter weekend at GT and it cemented the Yellow Jackets as early favorites for his services. Al Groh seems to be working his magic again in the Maryland area with Commissiong. I'm sure Tech will continue to have a lot of competition throughout the summer to stay at the top of Commissiong's list. As the offers continue to come in and he shows his skills at the summer camps, his rating and stock will only increase. This is one Tech cannot let slip away.

Best Guess: We Lead

JAMES ELLISON (6-1, 278 pounds) from Hamilton, GA is a three-star prospect ranked as the #55 defensive tackle by Scout.com. Ellison has offers from GT, Auburn, Michigan, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, and Tennessee. He was a lean to Auburn and has given them plenty of attention since he was present for their Junior Day and spring game but that interest seems to have slipped. It seems like James' recruitment will be a protracted one. I wouldn't expect a decision anytime soon. GT gets mentioned near the top right now, but the competition will be fierce.

Best Guess: Could Go Either (Any) Way

MICHAEL HILL (6-2, 315 pounds) from Pendleton, GA is a four-star prospect ranked as the #14 defensive tackle by Scout.com. He has offers from GT, Alabama, Clemson, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. Hill is the kind of defensive tackle everyone wants; the guy who can be a game changer on defense. He'd be an ideal prospect for a 3-4 nose guard; and Alabama can usually spot them well. He would like to commit before the season starts. GT is one of 8 schools that are on his list.

Best Guess: Unlikely But Possible

KELSEY GRIFFIN (6-2, 297 pounds) from Hoschton, GA is a four-star prospect ranked as the #13 defensive tackle by Scout.com. He has offers from GT, Auburn, UF, FSU, UGA, Maryland, Mississippi State, UNC, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Like Hill, he's pretty tough to read. He's attended camp at Auburn, UGA, and UT. I'd have to guess he's going to be an SEC guy. Kelsey is getting ready to trim his list and things may then become clearer.

Best Guess: Unlikely But Possible

DONOVAN MUNGER (6-3, 290 pounds) from Shaker Heights, OH is a four-star prospect ranked as the #24 defensive tackle by Scout.com. His offer list is lengthy including offers from GT, UGA, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Minnesota, NCSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Tennessee, WVU, and others. Even though he's from Ohio, he has actually been to see Tech already. He seems to like schools like ND and OSU so I think it will be a little difficult in the long run to get him down to the deep south to be a Yellow Jacket. GT still gets mentioned along with other favorites at this time so you can't count it out, but as other teams like potentially Michigan and Michigan State add to the offer list, GT could easily be lost in the shuffle.

Best Guess: Unlikely But Possible

JIMAL MCBRIDE (6-3, 281 pounds) from Waycross, GA is an unrated prospect listed as a defensive tackle by Scout.com. His offer list is short for now including schools like FIU, Georgia State, and Jacksonville State. He could be one though to put on the radar for more D-1 offers. GT hosted him for the spring game. He seemed to enjoy the visit and the program and is hopeful of an offer from Tech. He could do himself some good by getting out to some of the camps this summer to garner more interest. He's on the watch list.

Best Guess: Unlikely But Possible (an offer could change that)
