McDowell enjoyed everything about the visit. "It was more than I expected. I had a great time talking with the coaches and other recruits and players."
One of the coaches Cortez spent time with was Joe Speed. McDowell and Coach Speed talked about his junior season until their conversation was interrupted by Coach Johnson. "He pulled me aside and told me that he really loved my highlight tape and my play and dedication to both my school work and football. He then officially extended an offer to me."
McDowell was speechless after getting the offer. "At first I was very quiet and I didn't know what to say as I wasn't expecting this to happen this weekend. I was in shock to be honest."
Cortez told Coach Johnson that he was proud and honored to get the offer and thanked him. "I felt real good inside after getting it."
The offer from Tech now gives them an advantage. "A couple of years ago I had a family member that I promised I would go to a school close to home." That family member has passed away but getting this offer reminded Cortez of that talk and made him realize that he can still keep that promise. Cortez now has offers from both state schools.
At one time, Cortez was going to make his decision the summer prior to his senior season. That has now changed. "I will be making my decision after the Junior Bowl held on New Year's Eve."
The factors for making that decision have not changed. "It will come down to academics; which school will give me the best education." This will carry more weight than any other factor when Cortez makes his decision.
