Watkins Hopes to Make Spring Decision

Galion, Ohio athlete Dareian Watkins is being recruited to play multiple positions in college. With the contact period underway, his high school has been the destination for many college coaches.

Profile - Dareian Watkins

The latest school to show interest in Watkins is Iowa. "I have several that are emailing and/or facebooking but Iowa took the time to visit my school and spend some time talking to my coaches." Some other schools just starting to recruit Watkins are Maryland, North Carolina State and Pitt.

Watkins has 10 offers including one from Georgia Tech. "The Yellow Jackets were #10 but I've known the coaches for over a year now." Tech is recruiting Dareian as a quarterback. "The nice thing about their system is that they recruit quarterbacks that can play other positions."

The visits to Atlanta have been enjoyable ones for Watkins and his family. They especially like the weather there. "I think Coach (Brian) Bohannon is a great quarterback coach. I learned a lot from him in one day of camp there."

While Dareian has played multiple positions in high school, he has one position that he prefers. "I like wide receiver the best right now just because I am more comfortable with it." Another year at quarterback may change Dareian's opinion.

One little known fact about Watkins is his talent as a punter. "I love the punting thing. I'm always joking around about being a college punter but so far I'm not taken too serious."

Georgia Tech Coach Dave Walkosky has formed a good relationship with Dareian. "Coach Walkosky is from Ohio and we talk about Georgia Tech trying to recruit Ohio stronger." Coach Walkosky told Dareian the first time they met that he would be offered. Dareain's patience paid off and he now has the offer from Georgia Tech.

Illinois, Northwestern, and Indiana are three schools that Dareian talks to the most. "Ohio State is always there and Georgia Tech is always there. I am seriously considering Georgia Tech."

Playing time, winning, and the ability to be seen on TV are three things Dareain is looking at in making his decision. "I want my family and friends to be able to watch me play on TV no matter where I go."

Dareian is not looking to drag out his recruitment. He would love to make his decision in the spring or late winter. He knows that may not be possible. "I need to know what my choices are. I need to narrow it down to 3 or 4, then take a visit to each."
