Last week Washington County (GA) athlete AJ Gray received an offer from Georgia Tech. Today Gray and his dad made the trip to Atlanta and A.J. gave his verbal commit to Coach Paul Johnson. We talked to A.J.'s dad about the visit.
The visit was all that they expected. "We are both still walking 10 feet off the ground. AJ is so excited about his chance to go to Georgia Tech." AJ's dad was proud that his son's hard work paid off in the commit.
The Grays were met on the visit by Coach Mike Sewak. Following their time with Coach Sewak, they met with Coach Ted Roof. "He told us that AJ was his number one safety on his board and he would love to have AJ as a free safety in his defense." AJ loved what Coach Roof was telling him and committed.
The Grays next met with Coach Paul Johnson. "Coach Johnson welcomed AJ to the Tech family and told us the offensive coaches want him as a quarterback." Coach Roof let the offensive coaches know that they weren't going to steal his player. All parties involved got a laugh out of that exchange.
Mr. Gray had previously gone through the recruiting process with his daughter so committing early was not an issue. "I can tell when a coach is sincere and just going through the motions of trying to recruit. I can tell that the Georgia Tech coaches are very sincere in their recruitment of AJ."
Both AJ and his dad felt comfortable with the decision to commit to Tech. "With Coach Roof telling AJ that he was his number one safety on his board, that was a big factor. I could see he was telling the truth and not just telling AJ and me what he thought we wanted to hear. He was sincerely truthful."
The ride home was a good one for the Grays. "On the drive to his baseball game, I looked over at him and said son you are going to Georgia Tech. He laughed and said I sure am and I couldn't be any happier".
