Profile - Garrett Rigby
We talked to Garrett’s dad about the offer and their plans for his recruitment. “Garrett was thrilled and excited to receive the offer. He respects Coach Johnson and his staff, especially Coach (Joe) Speed.” Mr. Rigby felt there was some confusion regarding a possible commitment.
“Garrett didn’t commit but he is still very high on Georgia Tech. He loves the school and the staff.”
A return visit to Tech took place Monday to make sure the Rigby’s and the Tech staff were on the same page. “They said he still had his scholarship offer. They said they would accept his commitment if they hadn’t filled the scholarship by the time Garrett makes his decision.”
What was the reason for the confusion? Mr. Rigby didn’t want to venture a guess or put words in anyone’s mouth as to what happened. “I know Garrett had promised to visit Harvard, Yale and Princeton at the end of the month.” Garrett didn’t want to commit before visiting those schools. “Both Coach Johnson and myself agree that if other visits are needed, he doesn’t need to commit before those visits. Everyone knows where the other stands.”
Where does Tech like Garrett position wise? Coach Johnson knows Garrett can play both quarterback and safety. “The offer from my understanding was as a quarterback.”
Part of Garrett’s interest in Tech comes from wanting to major in mechanical engineering. He also knows that the Ivy League schools have strong academic reputations. Stanford is another school that Garrett has looked at in his recruitment.
The visits to the Ivy League schools will be the last ones for Garrett. Garrett and his dad will discuss the decision following the visits. “He loves Georgia Tech but he is also a man of his word.” A definite decision date has not been set.
Mr. Rigby feels that Garrett is just overwhelmed by the process. “This most likely will be the last interview we’ll do. We need to do this without outside distractions.”
