Matthews changes his game

National Christian Academy (MD) recruit Christian Matthews spent his spring and summer playing for Team Takeover on the Nike EYBL circuit. Matthews is now ready to visit schools as he nears his college decision.

The AAU season was one of adjustment for Christian. After being used to being the go to guy, Christian had to share that role with his Team Takeover teammates. “It took us a while to get used to the style of play of setting up your teammates to score.”

Christian has narrowed down his list of schools to DePaul, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, and Temple. “I’ve already set up an official visit to Georgia Tech.”

The official visit to Tech will take place the weekend of August 22. “I’m looking forward to the visit.” Matthews had previously visited Tech when former teammate Sylvester Ogbonda moved into the dorms this summer. Christian got to see the school and meet the players while spending the night.

Matthews also got to meet with the coaches on the visit. “Coach (Brian) Gregory told me he was looking for a big shooting guard that could fill up the basket.” Coach Gregory likes the mismatches the 6’6” Matthews would create at the two. Christian could also slide over to the three.

Coach Tom Herrion also met with Christian. “He likes that I’ve used what I learned this past AAU season to make me a better player.” Christian has a good relationship with Coach Herrion. “He’s always looking out for the best interests of players and recruits.”

Christian hopes to be a business management major and likes what he sees from the Tech business school. “That would be a great degree from a great school.” Official visits haven’t been set up yet to the other three schools on Christian’s list. “A December visit to DePaul may be in the works.” Christian knows players on both the DePaul and North Carolina squads.

There are no favorites on Christian’s list of four. “I know at each school I can come in and get minutes as a freshman.”

Christian plans to sign in the early signing period. “The sooner I make my decision I can concentrate on everything I learned this summer.”

There are two simple things Christian will be looking at in making his decision. He’s looking for a family atmosphere first and basketball second. “I’m looking for coaches that make basketball enjoyable.” Christian is surprised by all the schools that have shown him attention. “My family is happy for me.” Christian’s family will join him on the visit to Tech.
