Profile - Patrick Kearns
Darlington School, Georgia offensive lineman Patrick Kearns gave his verbal commit to Virginia Tech last July. The school recently made a coaching change and Coach Searels was not retained. Will Kearns stay with his commit or will he look at other schools?
Virginia Tech offensive line coach Stacey Searels played a big role in getting Kearns to commit. Searels has not been retained by incoming Coach Justin Fuente. Patrick had previously mentioned that if Searels was retained, he would stay with Virginia Tech. “I have talked with Coach Fuentes, and he has said he wants to bring in his own staff and I would have a new position coach."
When Patrick heard that, he thought about opening his recruitment. Georgia Tech was a school he thought he might take a look at again. “I was thinking about possibly making a visit to see how it felt being down there again."
Kearns was contacted by Georgia Tech Coach Andy McCollum when it became evident that Coach Fuente was making assistant coach changes. “He told me that anytime I wanted to come to Georgia Tech and visit that the door was open. I really appreciated the way he handled it. He didn't pressure me.”
North Carolina State was the second school to call Patrick. They too invited him to campus. “They wanted me to commit to an official visit. To be honest, I wasn't sure that was what I wanted to do.” At that time Patrick hadn't talked to the new line coach at Virginia Tech.
Since then, Patrick has talked to his new position coach. "We spoke and he seems to be a great guy. I’m going to visit Virginia Tech and let them recruit me again."
What does this mean for Patrick’s recruitment? "Right now it means that I am committed to Virginia Tech and will keep my word to them. I plan on signing with them on signing day.” If Patrick does not find what he is looking for on his visit things possibly could change. “At this time, I’m not going to go to any other school for an official visit or unofficial visit. I'm set on Virginia Tech right now."
The decision was not an easy one for Patrick. “Georgia Tech has been great. They have treated me so good. They have not put any undue pressure on me. It is hard telling the staff at Georgia Tech no a second time”
