Profile - Lucas Johnson
Prior to taking the trip, Lucas did some background work on Atlanta and Tech. “They both exceeded my expectations. The campus was so beautiful.” His parents also loved what they saw. “We all gave the trip a 10. I loved it that much."
Johnson was hosted on the trip by freshman B Back Marcus Marshall. “He showed me everything about the school and the ACC. Marshall also talked to Johnson about the value of the Tech degree and job opportunities through internships. “The fact that Coach Johnson is a winner on the field and makes sure his players do what it takes to get their degree means a lot."
Tech commits Xavier Gant and Jalen Camp also spent time with Lucas. “Xavier was recruiting me hard as were Marshall and Camp.”
The Tech coaches let Lucas know that the scholarship offer was there for him to take. “Coach (Paul) Johnson told me that I could come in and compete for the quarterback position.” The coaches like Lucas’ 6’3”-200 frame. “He said I had the strength and toughness he liked his quarterbacks to have. Lucas has watched film of past quarterbacks and he feels that running the offense is appealing. “I've run.it in high school and I’m familiar with the plays.”
Lucas could see himself playing at Tech. "The offense fits me, I love the city, and I love the players and coaches there.”
Touring the campus and seeing the facilities was the highlight of the trip for Lucas. "I loved the locker room, the weight training room, and I really loved the stadium.” Marshall related to Johnson how loud the stadium was when they beat Florida State. “I got goose bumps just thinking about it."
Next up for Lucas will be his official to San Diego State. Following the visit, Lucas will get together with his family and talk about both schools. Academics will be a priority in making his decision. “I take my school work seriously.” Lucas will also be looking at the traditions of the football programs at both schools. Finally, team chemistry will also be a consideration.
Will distance be a factor? “The distance may seem big but to me it isn't." Look for Lucas to announce his decision during the week following his San Diego State visit.
