Thomas is looking forward to his senior season and is surprised at how fast the time has gone by since he played his first game in the eighth grade. “I’ve enjoyed my time in high school and I’m looking forward to my next step as a college player.
This spring alone, Johnston has picked up eight offers. Georgia Tech is the latest school to offer Johnston. “I figured it was just a matter of time before they offered. I receive a lot mail and social media interaction from the coaches there."
The offer was extended by Tech defensive coordinator Ted Roof. The two talked on the phone last Thursday and the offer was extended. Coach Roof let Thomas know what he’s looking for in a linebacker and he feels Johnston has those qualities. “He wants a leader at middle linebacker and he sees that in me.”
Following the phone call, Coach Roof also visited Spanish Fort to watch the 6’2”-220 Johnston practice. Roof let Thomas’ coach know that he knew after one practice that Thomas was the player he wanted. Johnston’s style of play impressed Roof.
Johnston was also invited to come to Atlanta to visit Tech. “Everyone knows it’s a great academic school but he wants me to see that it’s also a great school that takes pride in its athletics.” Thomas’ dad has a good friend in Atlanta so the two of them plan to make a trip there this summer to get a closer look at Tech.
The offer from Tech brings Johnston’s offer total to 18. In addition to Tech, Arkansas, Auburn, Cal, LSU, and Oregon are the schools that are recruiting Thomas the hardest. Coach Roof has let Johnston know that he will continue to make him a priority. “Others are doing a great job but those are the ones that stand out.” Johnston will wait until after his senior season before he trims his offer list.
When he makes his decision, Thomas will be looking for the school where he feels most welcomed. He’ll also be looking for a school that will give him a shot at playing as a freshman.
