Profile - Owen Carney
Miami Central High School, Florida defensive end Owen Carney has garnered an impressive list of offers following his junior season. The weak side defensive end has now added another offer to that impressive list.
Carney and his teammates have just finished spring practice and he’s now looking forward to the last two weeks of school. Carney plans to enroll early and knows this will be his last summer before he becomes a college student. “I want to get a head start by participating in spring practice and getting used to being a student-athlete.”
Another school has been added to Owen’s possible college choices. "Georgia Tech offered me just this week.” Coach Buzz Preston extended the offer to Owen. Carney has a 4.0 GPA and values the education he could receive at Tech. Owen feels that Tech will be one school that will continue to be on his list.
Owen is aware that Tech defensive end KeShun Freeman came in and played as a freshman. “It’s good to know that they will play freshmen. Coach Preston said that head coach Paul Johnson will play the best 22 players first regardless of the class.” Coach Preston also invited Owen to come to Atlanta for a visit. Owen will be at the Atlanta SPARQ camp and could possibly swing by the campus. If not, Owen plans to visit once fall camp begins to watch the players and coaches.
In addition to talking to Coach Preston, Owen has also talked to defensive line coach Mike Pelton. Owen is 6’4” and close to 240. Coach Pelton likes what he sees from Owen’s drive and work ethic. “He feels that if I enroll early, I could take advantage of the strength and conditioning program by adding weight and maintaining my speed.”
With the offer from Tech, Carney now has over 20 offers. Prior to the offer, Owen felt that Duke, Illinois, Kansas State, and Syracuse were the schools recruiting him the hardest. Duke, Kansas State, Miami, Mississippi State and Utah make up Owen’s current top five. “Maryland is turning up the heat and Georgia Tech just offered, so my top five could really change over the summer. I like the way Tech is recruiting me and they are a good fit for what I am looking for in a college.” Owen won’t be afraid to change his top five.
Carney looks to have a busy summer ahead of him. He’ll be visiting Tech and he also wants to visit Army, Georgia, and South Carolina. The SPARQ camp and other national camps are also possibilities for Owen in late June and July.
His relationship with the coaching staffs will play a major role in Owen choosing a college. He’ll also be looking for a school that is not afraid to play freshmen. “I'd like a combination of football and academics and a student body that supports the team.”
Before he makes that decision, Owen plans to take all five official visits. "I'm not sure which ones will get the visits but I feel it’s best to take all five." Owen hopes to make an early December decision. "I want to take the visits but still have time to get everything to the school I choose and get ready to settle into the school I choose."
