Alex O'Connell visited Georgia Tech and felt welcomed

Milton High School, GA wing Alex O'Connell has seen his offer list grow as a result of his spring performance with Team United on the Nike AAU circuit. Friday, O’Connell visited one of the schools that has offered.

Once new Georgia Tech Coach Josh Pastner settled in, he invited Alex to visit. “We thought today was a great day to take the visit.” Alex made the short drive to the Tech campus and was impressed with the campus and the facilities. “I could envision me living there for four or five years.” The practice facility, the weight room, and the film room all stood out to Alex. “You can tell that Tech takes pride in their athletics.”

Meeting the coaching staff was also a part of the visit for Alex. “All of them made me feel welcome.” It was easy for Alex to see that Coach Pastner is a high energy guy that loves to win. “The first thing he said was that he was ready to make Georgia Tech the team it was back in their glory days under Coach (Bobby) Cremins. He wants to have the best players from the state and the nation want to come to
Georgia Tech. That is how much he wants to win at Tech."

The Tech staff likes Alex’s size and his ability to step out and shoot the three. Coach Pastner doesn’t want to pigeon hole Alex to one position even though he is 6’6”. “He said he plays an up tempo, fast paced game and wants players that can score and get back on defense.” Pastner feels that O’Connell is a perfect fit for his style of play. “He said the 2017 class has a chance to be a great class and he would love for me to be a part of it."

The visit and the meeting with the coaches got Alex excited about the offer from Tech. “I know I will be coming to a couple of games to see how he runs his team and how I feel I would fit into his overall game plan. I do know that the players will be the ones that will be fun to watch as he gets his system implemented at Tech."

O’Connell’s offer list is getting close to 25 schools. Alex hopes to start trimming that list by the end of July. He also hopes to sign in the early signing period in November. “I would love to have my recruitment out of the way and be able to just enjoy my last year at Milton.”

Alex has thought a lot about what he’ll be looking for in choosing a school. “I want to have a great relationship with the entire coaching staff.” Alex will also be choosing the school as though he were a student and not just a basketball player. Alex plans to be a business major. “Coach Pastner was quick to point out that Tech has a nationally ranked business school.” Finally, Alex wants to be able to make an impact when he is on the floor whether it be as a starter or coming off the bench.
