Profile - Bruce Jordan-Swilling
New Orleans, (LA) athlete Bruce Jordan-Swilling excels both as a running back and at linebacker for Brother Martin High School. Saturday Bruce visited one of the schools that is recruiting him as a linebacker.
Bruce described the visit to Georgia Tech as “amazing to say the least”. Bruce talked to with Coach Ted Roof and Coach Bryan Cook. His dad, former Tech player Pat Swilling, also spent time with his former teammate Ted Roof. “They are the best of friends and my dad stays in contact with Coach Roof and Coach Saeed (Khalif). They were big time players on the Black Watch defense in the 80's."
Coach Roof and Bruce talked about linebacker schemes, how Coach Roof develops a game plan, and how Coach Roof will be coaching the linebackers this year. “Several times he mentioned to me how much he would love to coach me and watch me grow as a person at Georgia Tech. You could really tell how genuine he was when he talked.” It was easy for Bruce to see why Coach Roof and his dad were such good friends.
There are no worries for Bruce when it comes to possibly following his dad’s legacy at Tech. "I hold myself to high standards. I feel I could make my own name at Tech.” Bruce’s dad expects him to be a top player and student no matter what school he chooses. “If I were to pick Tech, I would be putting my own stamp on the program and I would not be there just because my dad was so good at Tech."
Over 25 schools have offered Jordan-Swilling. Bruce has not trimmed his list below the current top ten. “If I were to drop it down to a top five, I do know that Georgia Tech would be in that top five for sure.” Bruce’s relationship with Coach Roof and Coach Cook and knowing that Coach Roof would get the best out of him at linebacker are the reasons for that statement. “This would be just like it would with his own son T.D. Roof."
Next for Bruce will be a visits to Alabama and LSU for their camps. "After that I am not sure exactly where we will be going." Bruce and his brother Tre are taking all the visits for each of them to find the right fit. “Hopefully we’ll find a school that fits both of us.”
The quality of his education will be a determining factor for Bruce in making his decision. “I want to talk to the students and players to get a feel for the school.” Bruce feels the students and players will be able to tell him what they are experiencing. His relationship with the coaches will also be an important factor.
If both brothers were to attend school in Atlanta, Bruce doesn’t see his parents moving back to Atlanta. "They would probably get a condo in town. New Orleans is home to them.” Bruce’s dad has good memories from Atlanta and they talked about them on the visit Saturday. “I can still see how much he cares for Georgia Tech and his friendship with Coach Roof and Coach Saeed."
