Profile - Demetris Harris
Jacksonville, Florida offensive lineman Demetris Harris recently narrowed his offer list to three schools. Georgia Tech, South Florida and Wake Forest made the final list for Demetris. This afternoon, Harris made his college choice.
Georgia Tech was the choice for Harris. The three schools were all even until Demetris made his visit to Tech on the 17th. On the visit, Harris met Tech commit Zach Quinney. The two became friends and liked Tech for the same reasons. Demetris had also been good friends with Tech commit Connor Hansen. “Connor had been recruiting Zach and me to come to Tech. It just made it easier to go ahead and commit.”
The fact that Tech is located in Atlanta also entered into the Harris decision. “I just love living in a big city and there is so much to do.” The offensive line depth chart was also a factor. “I know as a freshman I will get a good look at being in the two deep. I could see significant playing time as a freshman.” Tech’s academic standing was the final piece to the puzzle that led to Harris selecting Tech.
Harris will now shut down his recruitment even though he knows some schools will continue to call him. A coach from another school told him that no matter what, they are going to continue to recruit him. “I just need to make my official visit and sign my papers and it will be done.” Demetris will be coming up to Atlanta for games this fall. “That should let people know I’m firm on my commitment."
As planned, Harris sat down with his parents before he made his decision. His parents gave him their thoughts on each school. While never telling Demetris where he should go, they let him know that they would support whatever decision he made. “They wanted me to be happy and they are very happy about where I’m going.”
After giving the Tech coaches his decision, they talked about the offensive line. “They said that Zach and I could come in and work hard and be in the two deep.” Tech is looking to even out the numbers at each position on the offensive line. “I see it as a good chance to prove myself at all three positions on the line. I am agile enough to play any position on the line.”
Now that he has made his decision, Demetris has notified the other two schools. I called the head coaches at USF and Wake. "I feel that was the best way to handle it. They took the time to recruit me. I wanted to be the one that told them and handle it the right way."
Demetris is happy to have his recruitment behind him. "I loved the process but to be honest it got to be trying at times.” At the end, Demetris was looking for ways to get some down time. He even got to the point of leaving his phone at home to get away from things. “Now that I've made my decision, I feel that the calls won’t be as frequent but schools will still call to recruit me."
