Profile - O.J. Tucker
Ocala, Florida cornerback O.J. Tucker made the drive up from Florida today to visit Georgia Tech. Tucker made the visit with his uncle and spent the morning watching practice. Tucker left the campus with exciting news about his recruitment.
Tucker and his uncle picked Saturday to visit because they knew they could watch practice and then return for Fan Day. “I’ll get to see the players and how well they are supported by the fans.” Tucker was glad that he made the trip.
The visit went better than expected for O.J. “I wanted to see firsthand if last year’s team was a fluke and judging by practice, this team will be good.” Tucker expects the team to be back where they were during the 18 year bowl streak. Tucker especially enjoyed watching the defensive backs practice.
The campus was another part of the visit that stood out to O.J. “The facilities are great and especially the weight room. Coach (Paul) Johnson stresses academics and told me that he will push players just as hard academically as he and his staff does for football. That showed me he really cares about the players."
O.J. enjoyed the trip so much that he decided to end his recruitment and make his college choice. "It was so good that I committed to Georgia Tech. It felt like home to me and I just fell in love with the coaches, the school, and the football program.” Tucker felt that everything he saw was positive and decided to give Coach Johnson his commit.
Prior to the visit, Tucker didn’t expect to make his decision today. “I was just looking to see if Georgia Tech felt right to me. The vibe I got when I was there is unbelievable.” O.J talked it over with his uncle and told Coach (Lamar) Owens and Coach Saeed (Khalif) that he might commit. “Coach Johnson came over to me after lunch and we talked and I gave him my commitment."
The Tech coaches welcomed Tucker to the family once they heard the news. “Coach (Ted) Roof said he loves me as a corner. He wants big and physical corners.” Coach Roof let Tucker know that he could be a major player on defense. Coach Owens let O.J. know that he made the right choice. “I know he has been recruiting me hard for Georgia Tech and I see why now. Tech is the team for me."
Is O.J. ready to shut down his recruitment? "Basically it does. I can't see another team being able to give me the academics and the caliber of football that Tech can. I said in the beginning that I wanted to take all five of my official visits and that is still the plan. We’ll see how that goes."
A return to Tech for an official visit as well as game day visits is in the works for Tucker. Tucker has family in the Atlanta area which will make it easier for him to visit. “Today was a great day for me in my book."
