Jacksonville, Florida Robert E. Lee High School offensive lineman Demetrius Harris had been a commit to Georgia Tech since July 24th. On an in-home visit with Tech today, Harris informed Coach Paul Johnson that he was opening his recruitment.

The in-home visit was also attended by Coach Lamar Owens. The two coaches were in the area visiting other recruits and they also attended the TaxSlayer Bowl luncheon.

Demetris described the visit as bittersweet. “I decommitted from Tech. It was a hard thing to do.” Demetris felt that he was doing what was best for him. Harris wasn't 100% on board with Tech and wanted to take other visits. Harris understood that if he took other visits that Tech would have to recruit someone to take his place. "It’s only fair for him to do that. Recruiting is a business now. Both sides have to be sure where they stand.” Demetris felt it was better to tell Coach Johnson in person rather than over the phone.

The Tech coaches let Harris know that they understood that it was best to decommit if he wasn’t sure if Tech was the place for him. “They said it was disappointing that I wasn't coming to Tech because they were looking forward to having me on the team. We parted on good terms and that is something that is nice given the situation."

The decision to decommit revolved around the Tech offense. "I felt the offense wasn't the best scheme for me to develop as a player.” Even though he loved Atlanta, Georgia Tech as a school, and the recruits and players there, Harris didn’t want to be a player that gets to a school and then decides to transfer. “I didn’t feel like I was 100% sure of my decision while I was committed to Tech.  I felt that even when I was a commit that I was at 75-80% in my commitment to Georgia Tech.”

Harris was scheduled to visit Tech on January 27 but that visit has been cancelled. “The decision was made that we both go our separate ways.” The most difficult part for Harris was telling Coach Owens and to Coach Coach for that matter. “We have built a tremendous relationship and it will be hard to know I won't see him at school." Harris will be visiting South Florida on January 13 and Wake Forest the following weekend.  Other schools looking at him or Demetrius is looking at are Florida, Louisville, Central Florida, Rutgers, FIU, FAU, East Carolina, and Appalachian  State.  South Florida might be his leader.

Now that he has made his decision to open his recruitment, Demetris feels that he could reach a decision anytime between now and signing day. “I just have to get everything in place.”
