Tech is right move for Owens

Tallahassee defensive lineman Antwan Owens recently took an official visit to Georgia Tech. Following the visit, the former Central Florida commit did a lot of thinking about the visit and today Antwan changed his commit to Tech.

The change to Tech is one that Owens feels will be best for him in the long run. The education he’ll get at Tech was the main reason for the flip. “I’ll be getting one of the top degrees in the country and that is something I cannot pass up.” Antwan wants to major in either Construction Engineering or some form of Sports Medicine and Sports Physical Therapy.  “I know that both areas are top ranked and that was something that really caught my eye and made me change my commitment.”

Tech coaches Andy McCollum and Mike Pelton were in Tallahassee today to visit Owens and Antwan wanted them to be the first to hear the news. “We had a great conversation and then I called and told Coach (Paul) Johnson of my decision.  He said I made a wise choice, in his opinion, and he was super happy.”

Coach McCollum recruited Antwan hard and was happy to hear the news. Coach Pelton let Antwan know that he could play all four positions on the line. “He said I had the right height and weight they look for in a strong side defensive end and he could also see me playing rush side.” The coaches feel that after spending some time with the strength and conditioning program that Antwan could move inside. “I’ll play wherever they need me on the line.”

Owens had originally scheduled a visit to Central this coming weekend and he’s not sure whether or not he’ll still take the visit. “I did call the coaches there and told them of my decision and we both mutually agreed that this was probably the best move for me.”

Is Antwan on board 100% with Tech?  “I am whether or not I make the visit to Central Florida. I made this decision based on what is best for me. I know Georgia Tech is where I want to be.”

Owens is friends with another Central commit that is showing interest in Tech. Safety Tariq Carpenter is visiting other schools and is scheduled to be at Tech this weekend. While Antwan feels it would be nice to play his college ball with Carpenter, that didn’t play a role in his decision to commit to Tech. “My parents and I did a lot of soul searching and praying and Georgia Tech is where I feel I’ll have the best college career.” Top Stories
