New Look Jackets Play Together For First Time

Reminiscent of last year, the Georgia Tech men's basketball team lost in their first appearance before the home fans, 99-90 to Nike Elite, a team of former college basketball players.

Senior point guard Tony Akins had 21 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and only two turnovers. Sophomore Marvin Lewis, in his first start as a shooting guard, also contributed 21 points on 9 of 14 shooting. Freshman Ed Nelson came off the bench to add 17 points and seven boards. Clarence Moore added 12 points.

But that was pretty much the good news as Coach Hewitt used this exhibition to try and establish a style of play among his young freshmen. Seven-foot center Luke Schenscher struggled on one of seven shooting in his first taste of an Alexander Memorial Coliseum game. The other four freshmen played too: B. J. Elder contributed five points, Isma'il Muhammad four points, and Anthony McHenry failed to score.

The Jackets struggled mightily in the first half and trailed 51-35 at half-time. The encouraging news was that they played somewhat better in the second half. Top Stories
