Monday Practice Report

For the second day in a row, Georgia Tech's practice was interfered with by Mother Nature. On Sunday a constant rain made conditions poor for the quarterbacks to throw the ball cleanly. On Monday some spectacular lightning in downtown Atlanta caused practice to be cut a little short.

The Tech coaches use a system now to where weather warnings are sent to one of the assistant's cell phones when lightning is close by. Coaches were able to get the players under the awning and out of harms way before the bolts started to get too close. With nearly 2 hours of practice under their belt for the day, they decided to not risk sending them back out. Most of practice though had very good conditions. The spirit and intensity was up several levels from the soggy Sunday practice.

Exerpts from the practice report:

5. This was my first chance to get a good look at newcomer Jake Blackwood at Safety. My first impressions of him are pretty good too. From reports on his school work and SAT, he's a bright kid off the field. He seems to be a quick study on the field as well. He is lacking some in size but that seems to a theme in some of the toughest players Tenuta has coached here, like Gaston and Kelly Rhino. I haven't seen that tenacity from Jake yet but he does seem like a pretty heady player. I don't think Tenuta will have to expend too many of his remaining vocal cords on Jake. Blackwood made a nice interception on a ball thrown short in drills.

9. Tashard Choice had a strong showing today. He and Reggie Ball combined for one of the better plays today in my opinion. It just looked like an average play on the outside but on close inspection both guys made great decisions that I hope to see carry over into actual games. Reggie was running out of room and his options were covered pretty tightly. Choice broke from his coverage and found a hold in the middle of the field to give Reggie a nice target to get him out of trouble. Tashard made a nice catch, turned and would have earned a few more tough yards with his moves. The play might have gone largely unnoticed by some but I personally was very impressed with Choice working to get open and Reggie not giving up on the pass to take the ball himself. Tashard has looked very good running and catching the ball. He runs hard but also has a good burst of speed to the outside and has some homerun potential.
